US Open: Tiger Woods has a crazy up and down opening round
Tiger Woods put together one of the most interesting, up and down rounds you are going to see from anyone during day one of the US Open.
It’s not often that you are going to see a golfer only card six pars in a single round, but that is exactly what Tiger Woods did to start of the US Open this week.
If not for a rough finish, it wouldn’t have even been a bad day for Tiger, either. Through 16 holes he had carded six pars, five birdies, and five bogeys. He was sitting at even, and was in a decent spot, sitting in the top 20.
He had even put together some strong stretches of golf, highlighted by three straight birdies on the 9th, 10th, and 11th holes.

Then, disaster struck. Tiger would bogey the 17th, and double the 18th. The 18th was lowlighted by a chunk on his approach, and missing a five-footer for bogey, which would seal the deal for Tiger at 73.
There was plenty of “hurt” around the gambling world due to Tiger’s finish. In many places, his over/under for the opening round was set at 72.5. With two holes left, he seemed well clear of that, on pace for a 70. He managed to finish over, likely swinging a lot of bets and money in the process. I even know a guy who won a coffee because of it.
The putter was on for the better part of the day, which was a great sign to see after some of his recent struggles with it. However, the finish puts him in quite a precarious position.
If the afternoon groups play well, Tiger is going to be pretty far back of the leaders, with a lot of golfers in the way. As of 11:30 AM Pacific, Tiger was sitting in a T-94th place. Not only did his rough finish cost him strokes, but it also puts him outside the cut line.
To make it, he is likely going to need to shoot par or better tomorrow. We will have a better idea of his chances for it once we see how the course looks this afternoon, as that is when he will be playing tomorrow.
Tiger Woods was great for 16 holes, those two just got him in the end. He is going to have his work cut out tomorrow, and Winged Foot isn’t exactly an easy place to make up shots.
