Masters 2020: Can Bryson DeChambeau Successfully bomb Augusta?
The Masters is here, and we all want to know. Can Bryson DeChambeau successfully bomb away and win at Augusta?
Bryson DeChambeau has had a fair amount of success since changing the way he plays. He has won the Rocket Mortgage, and more importantly, the U.S. Open, along with some other strong finishes. He is about to face his toughest test yet, trying to successfully bomb away at Augusta to win the Masters.
Can he do it though?
Well, if the practice round that he recently played is any indicator, then yes, yes he can. In fact, we might need some new cameras to follow his ball’s flight path, cause he is hitting a whole ton of monster shots.

Check out some of the numbers that he posted during the practice round that he played with Sandy Lyle, a Masters winner himself back in 1988. If you want to see the whole list, you can check it out in the link, but I want to pull some of the ones that I am most impressed/concerned with and talk about those.
2nd Hole at the Masters – 575-yard par 5: Driver, 8-iron
Are you kidding me? I know plenty of people who hit 8-iron into a standard par-4. Bryson DeChambeau, at Augusta, is doing it on a hole that is 575 yards! I’ve heard a fair amount of people wonder about the conditions at Augusta. Remember, it’s in Georgia. So even though it’s November, the course is in insanely nice shape, and conditions are great. It’s been 70-80 for a while now, and the course is firm and rolling well.
Here is where it gets dumb.
3rd Hole at the Masters – 350-yard par 4: 3-Wood OVER THE GREEN!!!
The last hole was incredible, but this is nigh unbelievable. I would feel pretty confident that there are only a handful of guys on Tour that could do this with a driver. DeChambeau did it with a 3-wood. I am curious though as to what the angle on his 3-wood is. If he is rocking a 9-12 degree 3-wood, is it really a 3-wood? Still, impressive as all get out.
11th Hole – 505-yard par 4: Driver, 9-iron
Wow. To be at nearly a wedge on a 500-yard par 4 is incredible.
13th Hole – 510-yard par 5: 3-Wood, 7-iron
I mean, really? I’m running out of descriptors to talk about the kind of shots he is hitting and how far he is hitting them. If this is truly how he is going to be able to play Augusta, then I think we are definitely in for a changing of the guard at the top of the game.
I’ve been checking the weather at Augusta for the last couple of weeks, and you could tell that it was going to be warm. Somewhere in the 70’s. However, there is something coming that could change the way Bryson plays, and it’s going to affect him more than anyone else on the course.
Rain.
Bryson is swinging as hard as he can from nearly every tee box. When it’s nice out, that isn’t a problem at all. Once your grip and glove get a little wet though? Things can go nasty fast. Especially for someone who is getting 130+ club speed and 200+ ball speed.
With how far he hits it, the margin of error, especially, and I mean ESPECIALLY at Augusta is pretty small. There are trees and pine straw everywhere. You start getting back in there, and it’s hard to score.
Bryson DeChambeau seems to be hitting it further than ever. Further, than anyone on Tour has ever done. During his practice round with Lyle, he showed that he can do it there, and is in a good enough position to play wedges and short irons into the green. Beefy Bryson is primed and ready to bomb away at Augusta. Better have the divot fixer ready, with a spare for backup.
