The Masters: top 10 past champions who could win again in 2020
By Tim Letcher
No. 7 Danny Willett (winner in 2016)
Danny Willett won his Masters in 2016, another player who was a beneficiary of another player’s collapse. Like Schwartzel, who took advantage of Rory McIlroy’s misfortune, Willett did the same when defending champion Jordan Spieth melted down on the back nine on Sunday.
For those who have forgotten, Spieth had a five-shot lead with nine holes to play, only to see it all collapse, especially on the 12th hole, where he hit two balls into Rae’s Creek on his way into a quadruple bogey seven on the par three.
Meanwhile, Willett, who had hung around par all week long, giving himself a chance as Sunday’s round began. And Willett stood up to the major championship challenge, firing a 5-under par 67 on Sunday, which was tied for the low round of the day.
His 2016 triumph at the Masters remains his only win on American soil. He has won seven times on the European Tour, including in 2019 when he outdueled Jon Rahm to win the BMW PGA Championship.
Willett is still just 33 years of age, so he could certainly win again at Augusta National. He could also benefit from cool, windy conditions, having grown up in England with similar conditions.
