Bryson DeChambeau shoots 70 on Thursday at The Masters after a wild opening round

It was supposed to be one of a number of holes that the heavy-hitting Bryson DeChambeau took apart and instead it resulted in a double bogey for Bryson on the opening day of the 2020 Masters.

The Par 5 13th was a hole of much debate heading into the opening round on Thursday, with the majority of the conversation centered around what the U.S. Open Champion would do to it, what lines he would take to attack it off the tee with his monstrous drives, and how he would go about securing what was sure to be the first of many eagles across his scorecard.

Even Bryson DeChambeau himself expected to tear apart the Par 5’s at Augusta National, he even anticipated turning this traditional Par 72 into a Par 67 for himself personally when he made pre-tournament comments such as

"“I’m looking at it as a par 67 for me because I can reach all the par-fives in two, no problem,” DeChambeau said. “If the conditions stay the way they are, that’s what I feel like par is for me."

Course conditions certainly seemed ripe for Bryson DeChambeau to take advantage of after rain had delayed the start of round one by several hours.

However, what took place was a wild round for the young phenom all together including taking a double bogey on the seemingly gettable Par 5 13th hole.

DeChambeau was errant with his tee shot on the 13th hooking it right and into the native area surrounded by trees and pine straw and what followed turned into an absolute mess including a ball in the stream near the 13th green and a chip and a putt that both came up short of the desired result, he would have been hoping for.

Bryson DeChambeau would bounce back after the double-bogey as he would go on to birdie the next Par 5 just two holes later after locating the green in two on the Par 5 16th.  DeChambeau added a second birdie the very next hole after producing one of his best approach shots of the day on the Par 3 16th.

After starting on the back nine Bryson DeChambeau took to the front nine at Augusta National and would again take advantage of a Par 5 on the 2nd hole where he added another birdie to his card.

The U.S. Open champion was plagued by inconsistency throughout much of his opening round however as he struggled to find fairways with his driver, located just 11 of 18 greens in regulation, and missed several short putts on the day. These inconsistencies led to another bogey on the 7th after again missing the fairway off the tee and flying the green with his second shot.

While DeChambeau would bounce back nicely again with two consecutive birdies on his closing two holes he will need to be more consistent with his game heading into round two on Friday if he is in fact going to turn this Par 72 into a Par 67 as he put it.
