The Masters: Matthew Wolff Blows Chance to Make Cut
By Tim Letcher
Matthew Wolff appeared to be on his way to making the cut at the Masters. Instead, he blew up on Friday and will be headed home for the weekend.
Matthew Wolff came into the Masters this week with very high hopes. The 21-year-old was in contention at the last major, the U.S. Open, and was seen as someone who might be able to hang with the favorites this week, despite the fact that this was his first Masters.
And his week at Augusta National got off to a good start in Thursday’s first round. Wolff shot a 2-under par 70 and seemed mostly comfortable in his first Masters round.

Then came his second round, on Friday, which was a roller coaster of a day for Wolff. There were nine pars on his card on the day. But there was also a lot of everything else.
His day started with a bogey on the first hole, followed by a birdie on the par-5 second hole. Then came another bogey, on the third hole, as the yo-yo started.
Wolff would actually have a little bit of normal over the next few holes. He parred the fourth and fifth holes to remain at 1-over par. He then bogeyed the par-3 sixth hole to slip to 2-over par.
He closed the front nine pretty well, with pars on seven and eight, followed by a birdie on the ninth hole. That left Wolff with a 1-over par 37 on his front nine.
But the young Wolff saw his round fall apart on the back nine.
He started the back nine with a par on the 10th hole, but bogeyed the tough par-4 11th hole to slip to 2-over par on his round. He then parred the par-3 12th hole to stay at that number.
But on 13, he drove it right, then hit his second ball in the water. That was on his way to a bogey six on a hole where Wolff should have easily made birdie.
He would par the next three holes and still had a chance to make the cut. That’s until the 17th hole.
There, he lost his drive to the left, then got his second shot back into the fairway. His third shot hit the green but trickled back off the false front. His fourth was a putt that came up about eight feet short and his fifth was another missed putt. He tapped in for his double-bogey six. That left him at 3-over for the championship and, likely, outside the cut line.
For Wolff, it was a day of ups and downs that ended on the ultimate down – one that means he won’t be around for the weekend.
