Phil Mickelson Ties Worst Round at The Masters on Saturday
By Tim Letcher
Phil Mickelson has played many, many rounds at the Masters. But none have been worse than the round he shot on Saturday, one that included a snowman.
Phil Mickelson has played in the Masters 27 times. That’s nearly 100 rounds of tournament golf under his belt. And he’s never shot a score worse than the one he shot on Saturday.
The round started badly for Mickelson and just got worse as it went along. He started with a par on the first hole before his round started to go downhill.

Mickelson bogeyed the second hole. He bogeyed the third hole. He bogeyed the fourth hole. He was 3-over through four holes.
After a par on the fifth hole, Mickelson bogeyed the sixth hole, then the seventh. He was 5-over par at that point in his round.
Lefty did birdie the eighth hole before parring the ninth. He finished his front nine with a 4-over par 40.
The back nine did not start badly for Mickelson. He parred the 10th, then the 11th, then the 12th. He remained 4-over for the day.
Mickelson would birdie the par-5 13th hole to get back to 3-over par. A par on the 14th would keep him at the same score.
And then came the 15th hole. And the bad day got much, much worse.
On the par five, Mickelson yanked his drive into the pine straw. He tried to punch out with his second shot, but he hit a tree and went backward. His third was a pitch out that got him into the second cut.
But on his fourth shot, Mickelson flew the green. In fact, he flew the green so bad he ended up in the water way behind the hole. After taking his penalty, his sixth shot got him on the green, to about 15 feet from the hole. Lefty missed the putt to take a snowman, an eight, on the hole. That was a triple bogey that dropped him to 6-over par.
Lefty would close the day with a bogey on the 18th hole to complete his round of 79. Mickelson tied the worst round he’s ever shot in the Masters. In 2016 and 2018, both in the second round, he shot a 79, just as he did on Saturday.
Lefty hoped that he could have a big day and vault his way up the leaderboard on Saturday, perhaps even into contention. Instead, he dropped into a tie for 56th place out of the 60 players who made the cut. That was quite a fall from a tie for 17th place, which is where he started the day.
Mickelson’s dreams of a fourth green jacket were dashed in a big way on Saturday, as he tied the worst round he’s ever shot in the Masters.
