Fantasy Golf: Mayakoba Golf Classic Draftkings Preview and Player Picks
By Hans Geevers
Fantasy golf players will be happy to hear that the PGA Tour returns this week after a week hiatus. The Tour travels to Mexico for the Mayakoba Golf Classic!
Before I dive into my DraftKings/fantasy golf selections for the week, let’s take a look at the golf course the field will contend with this week and my key statistics for this event.
The Mayakoba Golf Classic will be played at the El Camaleon Golf Club. This golf course is a par 71 that measures 6,987 yards. This course is a tree-lined coastal track that offers small green complexes. It should also be noted that this track is a Greg Norman design.

This event has been played at El Camaleon every year since 2007. This is what all fantasy golf players want to hear. Why? Well, because this event has been played at this track for so many years, an abundance of course history is available for DFS players to evaluate as they compile player pools for DraftKings contests.
The key statistics I am looking at this week are driving accuracy, GIR (greens in regulation), strokes gained approach, and scrambling.
Here are my fantasy golf/Draftkings player selections for the Mayakoba Golf Classic!
Abraham Ancer $9,900
The 29 year old has two top 13 finishes in his last four tournaments played on the PGA Tour, including an impressive fourth place result at the Masters.
In relation to this week’s current listed Mayakoba Golf Classic field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Ancer ranks fourth in driving accuracy, 12th in strokes gained off the tee, and 13th in GIR (greens in regulation).
Carlos Ortiz $8,900
The 29 year old Mexican won the Houston Open in his last event played on the PGA Tour.
Based on the fact that Ortiz won the event, I decided to take a hard look at player statistics to see how he performed relative to the field. After four rounds of play at the Houston Open, Ortiz ranked second in bogey avoidance (5), eighth in GIR (greens in regulation-70.8%), and sixth in total birdies (18).
It should also be noted that Ortiz finished second at last year’s Mayakoba Golf Classic.
John Huh $7,400
When playing fantasy golf I like to look for motivation. Sure, I know every guy that tees it up this week is motivated. What I am making reference to is what I have determined to be “enhanced” motivation. For me, Huh fits that description perfectly.
What do I mean by enhance motivation? Well, let’s take a look at John Huh. Huh does not have a full time job on the PGA Tour currently. He is playing a limited number of tournaments on a major medical exemption. If he does not perform at a high level on the limited number of starts that the PGA Tour has provided him the man will be without a job.
Huh has been making the most of his limited starts. The American has two top 19 finishes in his last three starts on the PGA Tour, including a 12th place result at the RSM Classic two weeks ago.
Adam Long $7,800
Long has three top 13 finishes in his last seven events played on the PGA Tour, including an impressive fifth place result at the U.S. Open.
Peter Malnati $7,300
The American has three top 21 finishes in his last four events played on the PGA Tour. Additionally, I like the fact that Malnati has shown the ability to play well at this week’s event in the past. Malnati finished tenth at the 2015 Mayakoba Golf Classic.
Additional golfers I like this week: Harris English $10,100: Chez Reavie $7,700.
As always, good luck with you fantasy golf lineups!
