FanSided 250: Was Rory McIlroy snubbed?
By Tim Letcher
Rory McIlroy is one of the most accomplished golfers in the world, and one of the most popular. But he didn’t make the FanSided 250.
The FanSided 250 was released on Tuesday and professional golfers were completely left off the list. That means players like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, and even golf personalities like Paige Spiranac, were not included in the list of the top 250 fandoms in the world.
Woods is an obvious omission. He’s one of, if not the, greatest to ever play the game. He has changed the PGA Tour like no one ever has or probably ever will.

Spiranac is known for her good looks, revealing outfits and witty social media presence. While one could argue that she might not have enough of a following to make this list, her 2.9 million Instagram followers would say otherwise.
Then there’s McIlroy. He might not be an obvious first thought when it comes to this list. However, his social media numbers would say otherwise.
Rory has 3.2 million followers on Twitter. He has another 2.1 million followers on Instagram. That’s 5.3 million social media followers, a number that is hard to match for many athletes.
However, it was not enough to get Rory on this list.
McIlroy’s fans may have taken a step back because their man has not had a world of success lately. It’s been over a year since his last win and the 2020 season was certainly not his best.
But if this list is truly about who has the best worldwide fan base, there’s no way McIlroy should not be included. And he’s still just 31 years old, believe it or not, so that fan base is just going to increase.
McIlroy has proven to be personable and likeable as his career has moved forward. His social media presence is solid and engaging.
Frankly, McIlroy should be on the list. If he can have a big 2020-21 season, with a win or two, including a major, he will be on this list the next time it’s published.
