2021 Breakout Candidates: Talor Gooch poised to make a splash
We look at another PGA Tour golfer that could breakout during the 2021 season, continuing on with Talor Gooch.
Talor Gooch falls more in line with what you would expect when clicking around trying to find out more about a breakout player, in a more reasonable sense.
You can see that he is already on the right path when you check out how much his OWGR ranking has increased over the last year. Being able to jump from the 200’s up to 80 lets the rest of the world know that although he may not be one of the best on tour, he is definitely someone who belongs there, and is making a case for being there for the years to come.
By checking on how he has done this year, you can see that he has come close a couple of times already. Whenever you are able to grab two top-five finishes within a three-week stretch, you know that you are a pretty good golfer. It seems it goes beyond just playing a hot stretch and shows that you have the talent to do it on a more regular basis going forward.

It’s not just the start of the 20-21 golf season either, you can see his path to success and increased level of play by mainly looking at the back half of last season.
Over the last seven events of the season, he finished T-17th twice as well as a T-18th finish. Then there is a T-25th at the Wyndham in that same stretch. Talor Gooch has been able to put together a bunch of consistently strong rounds. Although he is yet to find the winners circle, it seems like it should be just around the corner. It’s what you would expect out of someone who is in their prime (He’s 29), and has been putting great rounds together.
Can it continue once he comes back from the Holiday break? If he pairs it with some of the early golf he played last year, then there is no reason not to think that. In his second event of 2020, he finished T-17th, and in his fifth event, The Genesis, he finished T-10th. He followed that up with a T-13th at the Arnold Palmer two events later. Those last two events are fairly big-name tournaments, with a large number of talented golfers in the field.
He has yet to make it into the top three of an event, but as we make our way through 2021, he will breakthrough and more. Look for Talor Gooch to give the PGA Tour notice as one of the breakout players in the upcoming season, as well as earning his first career win.
