Doc Redman: 2021 FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Doc Redman nearly won his first PGA Tour event earlier this season. But is he ready to make the next step and contend for the FedEx Cup?
With the 2020 portion of the PGA Tour schedule in the books, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at the current top 50, and some selected others, in the current FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 41, Doc Redman.
Best career FedEx Cup finish: Last season was Redman’s rookie season on the PGA Tour. He played in 24 events, highlighted by a tie for third place in the Wyndham Championship. Redman would make the playoffs and would finish 71st in the FedEx Cup standings.

So far this season: Redman has had a strong start to the 2020-21 season. His first event was the Safeway Open, where he finished with a spectacular 62 on Sunday to climb into a tie for third place.
In his next event, at the Sanderson Farms Championship, Redman had a consistent week, shooting 70, 70, 70, 69 to finish at 9-under par. That was good enough for a tie for 28th place.
Redman missed the cut at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, then took a couple of weeks off.
The time off seemed to help Redman. At the Bermuda Championship, he opened with a 65 and followed that with a 71 on Friday. After a 67 on Saturday, Redman was in position to earn his first win on the PGA Tour. But his 69 on Sunday left him in a tie for fourth place. While it was disappointing at the time, it was a second top five finish on the young season for Redman.
Redman played the Houston Open the following week and never really got anything going. He made the cut, but finished in a tie for 61st place.
In his final start of the calendar year, Redman shot 72-72 and missed the cut at the RSM Classic. Not the way Redman wanted to finish the year, but it was still a good showing overall.
The verdict: Redman is still just 22 years old and has plenty of good golf ahead of him. It’s not likely that he can contend for the FedEx Cup at this point in his career, so consider him a pretender this year.
