Sentry Tournament of Champions: Winners and Losers from Hawaii
By Tim Letcher
Find out who the winners and losers were at this week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions, including Harris English, Joaquin Niemann and Kevin Na.
Each week on the PGA Tour, there are those who do better than expected and those who fall short of expectations. Here are Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are this week’s winners and losers from the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
Winners
Harris English – He grabbed the lead on Thursday and held onto it all week long. He was the best player over the course of 72 holes this week. It took a birdie in a playoff for English to close it out, but he earned this title.
Joaquin Niemann – Trailing by five shots heading into Sunday’s final round, Niemann did everything he could to win. He had six birdies on his front nine and three on the back to get into the playoff. A big effort that came up just short in a playoff.

Justin Thomas – Started the day four back and got within a shot of the winner with a 66 on Sunday. The defending champion always plays well at this event, so seeing him here was no surprise.
Ryan Palmer – The veteran went toe-to-toe with some of the best players in the world and acquitted himself quite nicely with a solo fourth-place finish. While he might be disappointed with his Sunday 71, it was a good week overall for Palmer.
Sungjae Im – Quietly, Im had a big week in Hawaii. He shot 67 on Thursday, 68 on Friday, 67 on Saturday and 67 on Sunday to finish 21-under par and in a tie for fifth place.
Losers
Hideki Matsuyama – It took a final-round 68 for Matsuyama to climb out of last place. When everyone else was shooting in the 60’s Thursday through Saturday, Matsuyama shot 73-75-72. It’s hard to figure out what’s wrong with the Japanese sensation, but needs to get it fixed.
Kevin Na – He was in 26th place heading into Sunday, but an awful round, including five bogeys on his front nine and a closing double-bogey, dropped him into a tie for 38th. Altogether, his 79 on Sunday was by far the worst round of the week.
Robert Streb – The week got off to a nice start for Streb, who shot 67 on Thursday. But it was all downhill from there. He had a 72 on Friday, another 72 on Saturday and a 76 on Sunday to finish one shot ahead of last place.
Jason Kokrak – He was never really able to get anything going this week in Hawaii. Kokrak shot 71 on Thursday and followed that with a nice 66 on Friday. But a 70 on Saturday, then a 76 on Sunday, left him in a tie for 35th place.
Viktor Hovland – There was a point on Saturday where Hovland was contending for the lead. But on Sunday, he just didn’t have it. Hovland shot a 76 to slip from 10th place into a tie for 31st for the week.
