Rickie Fowler was once considered a sure-fire bet to win majors and maybe even a FedEx Cup. Now, at age 32, can he make a run in the postseason?

With the 2021 portion of the PGA Tour schedule now underway, we at Pro Golf Now will be taking a look at players outside of the current top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings and whether they are contenders or pretenders for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Our latest subject is the current No. 137, Rickie Fowler.

Best career FedEx Cup finish: Fowler has now played 11 seasons on the PGA Tour, believe it or not. He has been able to make it to East Lake for the Tour Championship in six of those seasons. He has finished in the Top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings three times, with his best finish coming in 2015 when he was fourth.

So far this season: Fowler started his season at the U.S. Open, where he shot a solid 69 on Thursday. However, he slipped back to a 77 on Friday. That allowed him to make the cut. He shot 72 on Saturday by followed that with a 79 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 49th place.

At the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, he shot 67 on Thursday. However, a 74 on Friday left him outside the cut line.

The following week at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek, Fowler opened with a 74. He followed that with a 68 on Friday and another 68 on Saturday. But a 73 on Sunday left him in a tie for 28th.

At the Zozo Championship, he opened with a 71, then shot a 67 on Friday. But he got nothing going on the weekend, shooting 73 on Saturday and 70 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 57th place.

Heading into the Masters, Fowler was hoping to get his first major championship title.

He opened with a 70 on Thursday and shot the same score on Friday. At 4-under par through two rounds, he was five shots back. A 75 on Saturday took him out of contention but his 70 on Sunday allowed him to finish in a tie for 29th.

In his final 2020 start, Fowler played the Mayakoba Golf Classic. There, he shot 70 on Thursday and 72 on Friday to miss the cut.

The verdict: Fowler took a big step back last season, finishing 94th in the FedEx Cup standings. He has won just five times during his PGA Tour career and he doesn’t seem like a threat to improve that number right now. He’s a pretender for the 2021 FedEx Cup.
