Bill Haas was hoping to start his 2021 calendar year with a big round at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Instead, it was much the opposite for the veteran.

Thursday was one of those days for former FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas. Playing at the Sony Open in Honolulu, Haas had some good, some bad and some ugly in his 2021-opening PGA Tour round in Hawaii.

Playing the back nine first, Haas’ day got off to a fairly normal start, as he parred the 10th hole. He followed that with a bogey on the par-3 11th hole to slip to 1-over par on his round.

Haas would par both the 12th and the 13th holes to remain at 1-over for his round. Then, at the par-4 14th hole, he stuck his second shot on the par four to within five feet and made the putt for birdie. At that point, he was back to even par on the day.

However, the success was short-lived. Haas stumbled backwards with a bogey on the par-4 15th hole and was quickly back to 1-over par. He would par the 16th and 17th holes before a bogey at the 18th hole. That left him at 2-over par on his first nine.

The back nine was much more of an adventure for Haas.

Again, things started out in a normal fashion. Haas parred the first hole, a par four, to stay at 2-over par.

But on the second hole, Haas’ round went from bad to worse. He hit his tee shot in the water. After a drop in the rough, his third shot got him back into the fairway. His fourth shot got him within 12 feet, but he missed the putt and settled for a double bogey six.

Haas would par the third hole before the roller coaster really got going. He would bogey the par-3 fourth hole. Then he birdied the par-4 fifth hole. Then he bogeyed the par-4 sixth hole. Then he birdied the par-3 seventh hole. That’s 4-3-5-2 if you’re scoring at home.

Haas would par the eighth hole to remain at 4-over par. Then he bogeyed the par-5 ninth hole to close his round with a 5-over par 75.

When he finished his round, Haas found himself in last place, 13 shots behind leader Peter Malnati. It was definitely not the round that he was hoping for to start the 2021 calendar year. Haas will hope to do something big on Friday to make the cut. But after the hole he dug himself on Thursday, it will be quite a challenge for Haas.
