Stewart Cink vaulted into contention at the Sony Open with a 63 on Friday. Can he win this week and add to his already magical season?

The 2020-21 season has gotten off to an outstanding start for Stewart Cink. And, after his performance at the Sony Open on Friday, it has a chance to get even better.

Entering this week, Cink was seventh in the FedEx Cup standings, albeit still very early in the season. But that’s quite an improvement considering that Cink’s best-ever FedEx Cup finish was 20th place, which came in 2008.

Cink is still riding the momentum of winning the first PGA Tour event of the season, the Safeway Open. There, Cink claimed victory on tour for the seventh time in his career and the first time in over 12 years. His previous win came in 2009, when he beat Tom Watson in a playoff at Turnberry to win the Open Championship.

Cink has played well a couple of other times so far this season on tour. At the Sanderson Farms Championship, he finished in a tie for 12th. If not for a 72 on Saturday, it might have been even higher.

And at the Bermuda Championship, Cink probably would have won for a second time this season if not for a second-round 74. Still, he finished in a tie for fourth place for the week, giving him two top fives in a season for the first time since 2018.

This week in Hawaii didn’t get off to an outstanding start for Cink. He opened play with a 67 on Thursday and was five shots back prior to Friday’s round.

But on Friday, Cink caught fire. And now, he could win again.

Cink started his day with a par on the first hole. However, he birdied the second to get to 1-under on his round.

After pars on the third and fourth holes, Cink recorded his second birdie of the day, this one at the par-4 fifth hole. He was 2-under through five.

He stayed at the number after a par on six, but got to 3-under with a birdie on the seventh hole. Cink would par eight and birdie nine to finish his front nine with a 4-under par 31.

Cink was strong on the back nine, with six pars surrounding birdies at the 12th, 14th and 15th holes. Altogether, it was a 7-under par 63 for the 47-year-old veteran.

When Cink completed his round, he was tied with Webb Simpson, although there were still players on the course. Still, Cink finds himself in contention for another win in 2020-21, which would make this his first multiple-win season since 2004.

It could be a magical week for Cink in Hawaii, one that would make this the best season of his PGA Tour career. And it’s still only January.
