It was a strong showing from the South Korean contingent last week at The American Express. Si Woo Kim won, Byeong Hun An finished T-8th, Sungjae Im T-12th and Kyounghoon Lee T-32nd.

Kim just missed out on making this week’s top 10. That’s because Im will overtake him this week.

The former player is a feast or famine performer while the latter tends to play well week in and week out.

Im had has many top-10s (six) as he did missed cuts worldwide in 2020.

His 2021 is already off to a stellar start.

The 22 year old held strong against an elite field at the Tournament of Champions where he took T-5th. Im made the cut a week later at the Sony Open then fired 68-65-73-69 in Palm Springs.

Im is seeking his second PGA Tour win following his 2020 victory at the Honda Classic. He grinded it out there at a tough test like PGA National.

I think he’s got it in him to grind out another victory at Torrey Pines. He doesn’t have the length you’d love to see out of a prospective winner, but he can get out there far enough a la past winners like Leishman and Snedeker.

Plus, like we saw in his T-2nd finish at the Masters, his iron play can make up for a lot of other deficiencies. He’ll also hit more fairways (23rd, 69.52%) this week than some of the big bombers.

Im debuted at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2019 by taking T-52nd (72-68-72-72). He improved to T-36th (67-73-71-73).
