Tony Finau has been an absolute machine over the years at the Farmers Insurance Open. He’s known as a consistent player regardless of venue, but Torrey Pines must be one of his favorites.

He’s come to La Jolla every year since 2015. He debuted with the first of six straight top-25s here.

Finau’s eye-popping results read: T-24th (73-68-70-74), T-18th (71-71-71-77), T-4th (73-68-67-71), T-6th (65-70-73-73), T-13th (69-69-69-70) and T-6th (70-70-68-70).

In total, that’s 18 under-par rounds out of 24. It includes eight in a row the past two years at Torrey Pines.

“The South sets up nicely for me with my length,” Finau was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2018. “I think length is a big advantage on the South specifically, so I’ve been able to put some good rounds together there. You know, it looks pretty good to me. A lot of the holes you can hit a fade and I’m a fader of the ball, I like hitting the fade off the tee.”

He was pretty solid all around stats wise in 2020, finishing no worse than 33rd in any strokes gained category.

Finau was in contention for his first PGA Tour win since 2016 last week at The American Express. Rounds of 68-67-68 got him into the final group Sunday and in a share of the lead after 54 holes.

A Sunday 68 was one of the better rounds of the day, but he was passed up early on by Patrick Cantlay and eventual champion Si Woo Kim and was never a big factor.

I’m not sure if Finau is ready to break through, but he’s going to churn out another high finish this week in California. He produces some of the fastest club head speeds on the planet. Ranking 23rd on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.5) will help him cut through the cold and wind expected.
