Davis Love III was named as the captain of the 2022 United States Presidents Cup team on Tuesday. And to say that Love is a perfect fit would be quite an understatement.

The 2022 Presidents Cup will be played at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. That happens to be the city in which Love was born. Many may also remember that Love was an All-American golfer at the University of North Carolina, famously introducing the game of golf to a fellow UNC student named Michael Jordan.

Love is also a three-time winner of the Wyndham Championship, which is played at Quail Hollow each season. His most recent win there came in 2015, when Love was 51 years old. So he obviously knows the course well, and knows how to attack it (and, as team captain, how to set it up best in order for his team to succeed).

It’s not only Love’s love for North Carolina and Quail Hollow that makes him qualified for this job. Love also has a stellar playing record in the Presidents Cup. He played in the first six Presidents Cups, where he went 16-8-4 overall. He has also been an assistant captain in three other Presidents Cup events.

Love has also been the United States Ryder Cup captain twice. In 2012 at Medinah, his U.S. team came up just short, falling to Team Europe 14.5 to 13.5. However, Love got his revenge in 2016 at Hazeltine when the U.S. won for the first time in eight years by dominating Europe 17-11.

This is exactly the kind of leadership that the United States team needs to continue to dominate the Presidents Cup.

Since its inception in 1994, the U.S. team has won the event 11 times, with just one loss and one tie. The lone loss came in 1998 and the tie was in 2003. The U.S. has won the Presidents Cup eight consecutive times.

With Love’s experience, leadership and love for the state of North Carolina, there’s no reason to believe that the U.S. team won’t make it nine in a row in 2022.
