Farmers Insurance Open: Five Groups to Watch Thursday and Friday
By Tim Letcher
There’s some definite star power in the field at this week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Some of the world’s best will spend Thursday and Friday playing in the same groups. Here’s a look at the five featured pairings for this week’s event.
Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson (Thursday, 12:40 ET; Friday, 1:40 ET) – Three past United States Ryder Cup players are in this group. Fowler is trying to figure out his game right now. Reed has played well and is always a threat to win. Watson can hit the long ball as well as anyone and is a past champion at this event (2011).

Phil Mickelson, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth (Thursday, 12:30 ET; Friday, 1:30 ET) – Mickelson has won this event three times, but not since 2011. He’s also finished second on two occasions. Schauffele is a threat to win every time he tees it up. And Spieth continues to try to find the magic that led him to so much success early in his career.
Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Matthew Wolff (Thursday, 1:40 ET; Friday, 12:30 ET) – Koepka is a four-time major championship winner, but he continues to fight his body, working his way back from injury. McIlroy is still one of the best players in the world, and he played well last week in Abu Dhabi. Wolff is a long hitter who is inconsistent. But he has proven he can hang with the big boys.
Jason Day, Marc Leishman, Jon Rahm (Thursday, 1:30 ET; Friday, 12: 20 ET) – Day has won this event twice, in 2015 and 2018. He also has a runner-up finish at the Farmers. Leishman is the defending champion and has finished twice in this event. Rahm won here in 2017 and was second to Leishman last year. He appears to be on the verge of the next step in his career.
Cameron Champ, Mackenzie Hughes, Sungjae Im (Thursday, 1:40 ET; Friday, 12:30 ET) – Champ can hit the ball as far as anyone and is always fun to watch. Hughes may not be a big name on tour, but his results are solid. Im was in contention last week for 36 holes and is an impressive young player.
This field is loaded with a number of the world’s best players. Come Sunday, it would not be a surprise if the winner came from one of these groups.
