Farmers Insurance Open: Robby Shelton Has Crazy Day Thursday
By Tim Letcher
Robby Shelton was probably hoping to have a nice, quiet round on Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open. Instead, he had a crazy first nine holes that included only two pars.
Playing the South Course, and starting on the back nine, Shelton’s day started in fine fashion. On the par-4 10th hole, Shelton drove it in the fairway, knocked his approach within 10 feet and made the putt for birdie.

But his troubles started on the par-3 11th hole. Shelton missed the green to the left, then pitched to about 20 feet. He missed the putt and settled for a bogey.
On the par-4 12th, Shelton found the rough off the tee, found the rough with his second, then got on the green with his third. But his par putt from about 25 feet missed. It was a second straight bogey for Shelton.
He recorded one of his two front-nine pars at the par-5 13th hole. That came just before he got into trouble at the 14th.
Playing the par-4 14th, Shelton again drove into the rough. His second shot got him close to the green, although he was still in the rough. His third shot got him to about 25 feet from the hole. However, Shelton ran his par putt about six feet past the hole. He then missed his comeback putt and tapped in for a double bogey.
Shelton would also suffer bogeys at the par-4 15th hole and the par-3 16th hole. At that point, he was 5-over through seven holes.
However, Shelton did not give up on his round. He bounced back on the par-4 17th hole. He hit a fairway bunker off the tee, but was able to get his second shot about 12 feet from the pin. He rolled in the birdie putt, his second of the day, to get back to 4-over.
Shelton recorded the second par of his round on the 18th hole, going out in 4-over par 40. To recap, Shelton had four bogeys, a double, two birdies and two pars.
The roller coaster continued for Shelton as he made the turn. On the par-4 first hole, Shelton recorded a birdie. Then he birdied the second hole. He got back to 2-over par at that point.
Things settled down a bit for Shelton, who birdied the next three holes.
He then birdied the par-5 sixth hole, but slipped back with a bogey on the seventh hole. He would par the eighth and birdie the ninth to finish with a 1-over 73 that included six pars, six birdies, five bogeys and a double.
It was a wild day for Shelton, but also a very nice bounce back on the back nine. That will allow him to have a chance at making the cut on Friday.
