Rickie Fowler has not had a very good start to the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. But the time is right, at this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, for Fowler to get things turned around.

So far this season, Fowler has been very average. His season started at the U.S. Open, where a 79 on Sunday dropped him into a tie for 49th place. After almost a month off, Fowler missed the cut at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

The following week, Fowler was in the mix at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. However, a 73 on Sunday dropped him into a tie for 28th place. He followed that with a lackluster T57 at the Zozo Championship at Sherwood.

Probably his best showing of the season came at the Masters in November. There, Fowler shot three rounds of 70, combined with a 75 on Saturday. That left him a 3-under par and in a tie for 29th place.

Fowler would miss the cut at the Mayakoba Golf Classic to close his 2020 calendar year. He would have more than a month off before returning to the tour.

His return, at the American Express two weeks ago, produced his best result of the season.

Fowler started slowly, with a 73 on Thursday. But he bounced back nicely with a 66 on Friday, a 70 on Saturday and a 68 on Sunday. He finished at 11-under par and tied for 21st.

Last week at the Farmers Insurance Open, Fowler shot 70 on Thursday, but followed that with three consecutive rounds of 73. At 1-over par, he finished T53.

So why would this seem like the week that Fowler might snap out of his funk? He has shown zero signs of things trending in the right direction.

That’s true. But what is also true is that Fowler loves the Phoenix Open. Fowler won at TPC Scottsdale in 2019. He tied for 11th in 2018, tied for fourth in 2017, finished second in 2016 and was also the runner-up in 2010.

In other words, Fowler has a strong history at this event. And, after a series of close calls, he actually did win here in 2019. It seems that, if Fowler is going to get right, this is the week.

The prediction here is that Fowler will not win, but will have his best finish of the season, to this point, this week. He needs that to happen to get himself going in the right direction.
