2021 Genesis Invitational: Groups to Watch on Thursday, Friday
By Tim Letcher
The PGA Tour heads to legendary Riviera Country Club outside of Los Angeles this week for the Genesis Invitational. Riviera is one of the longest-running stops on tour, having been played since 1926.
The Genesis Invitational annually draws an excellent field and this year is no exception. And there are some outstanding pairings at Riviera this week. Here is a look at the top five groups that will be playing together on Thursday and Friday.

Cameron Champ, Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy (Thursday, 2:43 ET; Friday, 10:13 ET) – This group will be a lot of fun. Champ is one of the longest hitters on tour. DeChambeau is probably THE longest hitter on tour. And McIlroy is no slouch either, and is definitely the best player in the group.
Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm (Thursday, 10:13 ET; Friday, 2:43 ET) – Cantlay has one win this season already and nearly won last week at Pebble Beach. Morikawa is one of the true young stars of the game. Rahm is the best player in the world not named Dustin Johnson.
Brooks Koepka, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas (Thursday, 2:54 ET; Friday, 10:24 ET) – Koepka won in Phoenix two weeks ago and proved that he’s fully back from the injuries that have plagued him. Schauffele easily could have won in Phoenix if not for Koepka and a poor final round. Thomas can literally win any time he tees it up on tour.
Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Bubba Watson (Thursday, 10:24 ET; Friday, 2:54 ET) – Johnson is the best player in the world and he just keeps winning. He won here in 2017 and will be the favorite again this year. Scott is a two-time winner of this event (2005 and last year) and loves this course. Watson has also had a lot of success here, winning in 2014, 2016 and 2018.
Sergio Garcia, Marc Leishman, Gary Woodland (Thursday, 3:38 ET; Friday, 11:08 ET) – Garcia already has a win on tour this season as he tries to climb back toward his past glory. Leishman has been up and down but is among the world’s Top 50. Woodland is a long hitter who has proven he can play with anyone on tour.
The field includes a number of other big names including Jordan Spieth, who has found himself in contention the last two weeks.
This should be a fun week in LA, with plenty of storylines to keep an eye on.
