He may be 50 years old, but Jim Furyk is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. The latest example of this came on Thursday at the Genesis Invitational.

Furyk was rock solid all day long while playing the challenging Riviera Country Club layout. Playing the back nine first, he got off to a solid start with easy birdies on numbers 10, 11 and 12.

Then on the 13th hole, Furyk got into red figures. He hit a beautiful drive into the fairway and knocked his approach shot about 15 feet from the cup. He rolled in the putt to get to 1-under on the day.

He had to get up-and-down from the rough to make a par on the par-3 14th hole, but was able to do so. He did the same thing on the par-4 15th hole to remain at 1-under.

Furyk made a routine par on the par-3 16th hole. Then on 17, a par five, he drove his ball into the rough. He positioned himself nicely with his second shot, leaving him just over 100 yards to the hole. His third shot landed about three feet from the cup and the veteran made the birdie putt to get to 2-under on his round.

He would close his first nine with another routine par at the 18th hole. That left him with a 2-under par 34 on his first nine.

Staying steady, Furyk had no troubles on his second nine.

Fuyrk had chances at birdie on his first eight holes on his second nine. He did not make any of them, but he did record eight straight stress-free pars.

On his final hole of the day, Furyk hit his approach shot to the fringe. And, from about 30 feet, he rolled his putt about eight feet past the hole. But he made the comeback putt and finished his second nine with an even-par 35. That left him with a 2-under par 69 on the day. He’s currently three shots behind leader Matthew Fitzpatrick, who is 24 years younger than Furyk.

This is Furyk’s fourth start on the PGA Tour this season and he’s in position to make his fourth straight cut. He finished T46 at the Safeway Open in September. He tied for 47th at the Sony Open in January. And he finished T21 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last week.

Furyk is currently 173rd in the FedEx Cup standings but that figures to be on the way up this week. He continues to play well at age 50 and there’s no sign of the 17-time winner on tour slowing down.
