Genesis Invitational: Big Names Miss Cut at Riviera
By Tim Letcher
Some of the bigger names in the field at this week’s Genesis Invitational won’t be around for the weekend. That’s right, fans hoping to see certain players ranked in the Top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking will be disappointed on Saturday and Sunday.
In a field filled with some of the biggest names in the world of golf today, Sam Burns holds a five-shot lead through two rounds. Tyler McCumber and Jason Kokrak are tied for second.

Then there’s the other end of the spectrum. This week’s event started with 120 players. Not many people would have expected Justin Thomas to finish with a 77 on Thursday and a 73 on Friday, for an 8-over total and in a tie for 116th place. That’s right, the world’s third-ranked player was only able to finish ahead of three players, one of whom withdrew from the tournament.
Rory McIlroy did not do much better than Thomas. Ranked seventh in the world, McIlroy shot 73 on Thursday and 76 on Friday to finish at 7-over par. That was good enough to finish in a tie for 114th place.
How about Bryson DeChambeau? The long hitter is ranked 10th in the world but this was not his week, especially on Thursday. DeChambeau opened the event at Riviera with a 75 in the first round. He did bounce back nicely with a 69 on Friday, but that still left him at 2-over par and outside the cut line.
Bubba Watson is a three-time winner of this event and was seen as a player who had a chance to do so again this week. But after shooting 71 on Thursday, Watson had a 75 on Friday and will not be playing the weekend.
There are other big names who also will not be playing the weekend at Riviera. Hideki Matsuyama had a rough day on Friday and missed the cut. Sergio Garcia shot 72 on Thursday and 71 on Friday, leaving him outside the cut line at 1-over par.
While there are some big names lurking on the leader board, names like Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, many of the players expected to compete for a title this week will be missing the weekend.
