Genesis Invitational: Sam Burns pulls away at Riviera

Headed into the week, Sam Burns was nowhere near the top of the odds for the Genesis Invitational. In fact, many oddsmakers had Burns’ odds at 100-1 or even lower.
After seven birdies and an eagle propelled the 24-year old to a 7-under par 64, Burns held an already commanding two-shot lead over second place.

Many thought Burns would come back down to Earth on Friday after such a dominant opening round, but Burns may have played an even better second round.
Even though he shot a 64 on Thursday, two bogeys held Burns back from what could have been a historical round.
On Friday, Burns played like a seasoned PGA Tour veteran.
Burns did not light up the leaderboard like he did on Thursday, but his bogey-free round is perhaps the more impressive feat of the two rounds.
Despite being one of the first groups to tee off on Friday, Burns came out on fire. He racked up birdies on two of his first three holes. This gave Burns an astounding SEVEN birdies within his last nine holes of play.
After the hot start, Burns seemed to cool off a bit with four straight pars. However, on the par-5 17th, Burns once again birdied.
His three birdies were good enough for a 3-under par 33 on his first nine holes.
Burns came out hot after turning the corner as well. A birdie on the par-5 1st gave Burns his fourth of the day.
Burns followed up his birdie with another streak of four pars before he racked up his fifth birdie of the round on the par-3 6th hole.
After back-to-back nearly perfect rounds, Burns currently sits at 12-under par.
Despite strong showings from other guys such as Tyler McCumber and Jason Kokrack, Burns holds a five shot lead at the time of publishing.
