The PGA Tour Champions returns to action this Friday with the 2021 Cologuard Classic. Draftkings is offering the fantasy golf community with showdown contests for the first round of this event. Let’s see if we can find some golfers to help you take down a contest for this slate!

Before I discuss my fantasy golf/Draftkings player selections I want to clearly state that this article is specifically focused on the first-round showdown contest. The showdown contest is vastly different with regard to scoring than the traditional contest offered by Draftkings for DFS golf.

If you are not familiar with the rules for the showdown contest I recommend that you check out the DraftKings website for more details.

Here are my fantasy golf player selections for Thursday’s DraftKings first-round fantasy golf showdown slate.

Phil Mickelson $11,000

Phil Mickelson has played two PGA Tour Champions events since his debut on the Tour last year. How has he performed you may ask? I think it’s fair to say that Phil has performed exceptionally well. More specifically, Mickelson won both PGA Champions Tour events he has played (2020 Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National, 2020 Dominion Energy Charity Classic).

It should be noted that Mickelson’s first round scoring average in the two rounds he has played on the PGA Tour Champions is 64.5. After all, if you want to win a single round showdown slate, you need all six golfers in your lineup to go low. Clearly, Mr. Mickelson can do just that.

Scott Parel $9,000

The 55 year old American has five top 23 finishes in his last six events played on the PGA Tour Champions, including a fifth place result at the Sanford International.

What I really like about Parel is he likes to jump out of the gates quickly in tournament play. Parel currently ranks second on the PGA Tour Champions in first round scoring average. In 16 first rounds played this season, Parel’s average first round score is 68.44.

Mike Weir $8,200

The 2003 Masters champion fired a first round 68 at the PGA Tour’s 2021 Sony Open last month on his way to a 47th place finish. I know that a 47th place result is not impressive. However, the Sony Open is a PGA Tour event. Weir shot a first round 68 in an event that featured the best golfers in the world. If he can do that on the PGA Tour, I think Weir has the potential to shoot a low first round at this week’s Cologuard Classic on the PGA Tour Champions.

Wes Short $7,600

Short has three top 21 finishes in his last four events played on the PGA Tour Champions, including a fourth place result at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in November.

Kent Jones $7,200

The 54 year old has three top 18 finishes in his last five events played on the PGA Tour Champions, including a seventh place result at the TimberTech Championship. Jones also finished 20th at the 2019 Cologuard Classic. I think Jones presents outstanding fantasy golf value at a Draftkings price of only $7,200.

Additional golfers I like: Jim Furyk $10,400: Steve Stricker $10,200: Tim Petrovic $7,500.

As always, good luck!
