Dustin Johnson is the number one player in the world and was seen as one of the favorites for this week’s WGC-Workday Championship in Florida. But after a tough round on Thursday, DJ will need a huge comeback in order to get himself into the mix.

Johnson’s round on Thursday started innocently enough. He recorded pars on the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th holes. Then on the par-4 15th hole, DJ stuck his approach shot about three feet from the cup. He made the putt to get to 1-under par.

However, on the very next hole, Johnson gave that shot back. He hit his tee shot into the rough and his second shot also came to rest in the long grass. His third shot got him to about 12 feet but he missed the putt and settled for a bogey.

After a par on the 17th hole, DJ found more trouble on the 18th. He hit his tee shot to the tree outline on the left. His second shot actually had to go backwards just a bit so that he could have a clear shot for his third. From 170 yards out, DJ was only able to get within 40 feet. Then, he three putted to make a double-bogey six. He finished his first nine at 2-over par.

DJ looked to get things going on the back nine, which started fairly well for him.

He parred the first and second holes to stay at 2-over par. Then on the par-5 third hole, Johnson hit the green in two and needed two putts for his birdie. He was back to 1-over par.

But just like he did on the front nine, DJ faltered on the very next hole. On the par-3 fourth hole, he hit his tee shot into a bunker and was unable to get up-and-down. It was a bogey four and he was back to 2-over par.

Then on the par-4 fifth hole, the wheels came completely off for DJ. His tee shot landed in the water and he took a drop, more than 300 yards from the hole. His third shot left him about 150 yards to the green and his fourth got him onto the putting surface. But his 15-foot bogey putt missed and DJ suffered a double bogey.

He would also bogey the par-5 seventh hole on his way in. That left him with a 5-over par 77, by far his worst round of the season on the PGA Tour. His worst round prior to Thursday was a 73 in the first round of the U.S. Open in September. In fact, it was DJ’s worst round since he shot a 78 at the 3M Open last year before withdrawing due to injury.

He’s still the best player in the world, but Thursday was not Johnson’s day.
