WGC-Workday Championship: One Hole Derails Cameron Smith
By Tim Letcher
Things were looking good for Cameron Smith on Saturday at the WGC-Workday Championship. Smith trailed Brooks Koepka by one shot after 36 holes and he was in fine shape as Saturday’s round began.
Things started looking up for Smith right away. Koepka bogeyed the first hole while Smith birdied and the Australian immediately grabbed the lead. Smith would par the second hole, then birdie the par-5 third and he suddenly was the man at the top of the entire field, which includes most of the best players in the world.

Smith got to enjoy his time at the top of the leader board for exactly one hole. He was able to record a par on the par-3 fourth hole while still holding the lead.
Then, he came to the par-4 fifth hole and it all dell apart. Smith pulled his tee shot left and into the water. After taking a drop, he hit his third shot right and into a fairway bunker. From there, Smith hit his fourth shot into the water again. He took a drop and, from about 110 yards, his stuck his sixth shot about six feet from the hole. He made the putt for a a triple-bogey seven. He went from one shot ahead to two shots behind on one hole.
Smith never really recovered from that costly hole. He recorded another bogey on the par-4 eighth hole and finished his front nine with a 2-over par 38.
He made another bogey on the par-3 11th hole and his chances at winning were completely gone. After being in the lead, Smith was, at one point, 10 shots back of the lead. And all of that happened in the span of about seven holes.
Unfortunately for Smith, the day kept getting worse. He would record a double bogey on the par-5 13th hole and would also bogey the par-4 16th hole. By the time it was over, Smith had shot a 77 and dropped about 20 spots in the standings. And it all started on one bad hole on his front nine, one that Smith seemed to carry with him for the remainder of his round.
