Florida is home to the Kennedy Space Center, which is know for its countdowns prior to the launch of space shuttles. But Thursday in Florida, at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Brian Gay had a countdown of his own that left him with a very unique-looking scorecard.

Gay, who won earlier this season at the Bermuda Championship, started his Thursday round at Bay Hill on the back nine and immediately got into trouble. He hit his drive way right, had to take a penalty, found a fairway bunker and then the rough on his way to a triple bogey seven.

On his next hole, the 11th, Gay hit his drive in the intermediate rough, then hit his second shot in water. After a penalty, he got his fourth shot to the fringe but needed two to get in. It was a double-bogey six.

The next hole was the par-5 12th, where Gay found a fairway bunker off the tee. He got his second shot into the fairway and his third onto the green. He would two-putt for a par five.

Gay hit his tee shot on the par-4 13th into another fairway bunker. He was able to get his second shot on the green, then used two putts to get down for a par four.

On the par-3 14th hole, Gay’s tee shot came up short. He pitched up to about 10 feet and made his putt for a par three.

So, if you have been paying attention, you see that Gay started his day 7-6-5-4-3.

He did not make a two at the par-4 15th. Instead, it was a bogey five. Ironically, that started a run of 5-4-3 for Gay.

Gay would record a pair of bogeys on his second nine to slip to 7-over par at one point in his round. However, the 49-year-old was able to birdie the par-5 sixth hole. He would end up shooting a 6-over par 78, which placed him near the bottom, but not at the bottom, of the field.

But the 78 is not what people will remember about Gay’s Thursday round. It will be his 7-6-5-4-3 start to the day.
