Arnold Palmer Invitational: Winners and losers from Bay Hill
By Tim Letcher
Every week on the PGA Tour, there are players who do better than expected and those who fall short of expectations. Here at Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are the winners and losers from this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Winners
Bryson DeChambeau – He went toe-to-toe with veteran Lee Westwood on Sunday and won, bombing and goughing his way to another PGA Tour championship. DeChambeau is playing the game in a totally new way and he’s winning.

Lee Westwood – At 47 years old, Westwood was trying to win for the first time in the U.S. since 2010. He came up just short but he showed that he had plenty of game, going at it with a player 20 years his junior.
Corey Conners – Conners finished a season-best third and had a legitimate shot at his second PGA Tour title. While he came up short of winning, he has only had two finishes better than this in his career.
Richy Werenski – The 29-year-old had not finished inside the Top 20 all season but at the API, he was able to finish T4. His consistent week earned him that top five showing.
Andrew Putnam – It was a second straight top-five finish for Putnam with a T4 this week. He had a T5 last week in Puerto Rico and now has three Top 10s this season.
Losers
Jordan Spieth – He keeps knocking on the door but has been unable to close on Sunday. This week was the same story. He had a chance to win but shot 75 on Sunday to fall into a tie for fourth. That’s a great finish for most players, but the Spieth we once knew is not most players.
Viktor Hovland – The talented youngster was in contention through 36 holes before a disastrous weekend. Hovland shot 77 on Saturday to fall out of contention, then shot 78 on Sunday to drop from 36th to 51st overall. Not the weekend that he wanted, nor what was expected of him.
Rickie Fowler – He made the cut this week in Florida but finished last among the players who did so. Fowler only had one good round, which was a 70 on Friday. Otherwise he shot 76 (Thursday and Saturday) and 77 (Sunday).
Camilo Villegas – It’s been good to have Villegas back on tour this season and he has done fairly well. But he shot an 81 on Thursday at Bay Hill to take himself out of the mix early. He was able to shoot 70 on Friday but it was not nearly enough to get him inside the cut line.
Robert Gamez – He’s a former champ at Bay Hill, but it’s probably time for Gamez to stop playing in this event. He shot a 92 on Friday (yes, a 92) and missed the cut by 25 shots. Yikes.
