The 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass is one of the most famous holes in golf. The par three with the island green is not only the signature hole of the Players Championship, it’s one of the most famous holes in golf. And on Thursday, Byeong Hun An experienced just how cruel the hole can be.

An was having an average round on Thursday. His first nine was very quiet overall. He had seven pars to go with a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole and a bogey on the par-3 eighth. It all added up to an even-par 36 for An.

On the back nine, An parred the 10th before a bogey on the 11th. That left him at 1-over par on his round. He would par the 12th and 13th to stay at that number.

An would bogey the par-4 14th hole before a par on the 15th. He was 2-over par at that point but he birdied the par-5 16th hole to get back to 1-over on his Thursday round.

Then An arrived at the famous 17th hole. And it’s a hole he will never forget.

An’s tee shot landed in the water. After taking a penalty, his third shot also landed in the water. An would take another drop and his fifth shot, you guessed it, landed in the water.

An would drop yet again and his seventh shot, for the fourth time on the hole, went in the water. He dropped again and with his ninth, he did finally find dry land, on the green, about 25 feet from the hole.

His putt for a 10 missed and he made a four-footer for an 11. That’s the second-highest score ever recorded on the hole during the Players Championship. Bob Tway carded a 12 on the 17th in the 2005 Players.

An went from 1-over to 9-over on one hole. To add insult to injury, An hit his tee shot on the 18th hole into the water on his way to a double bogey. That left him with an 83 on the day.

The 17th hole is world famous and it’s also a place that An will always remember after his round on Thursday.
