Players Championship: Doug Ghim (Wait, Who?) in Mix After 54 Holes
By Tim Letcher
The leader board at the Players Championship, through three rounds, features some of the game’s biggest names. There’s Lee Westwood, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas and Paul Casey. And, there’s Doug Ghim.
Wait, who? It’s no surprise to see Westwood, DeChambeau, Thomas and Casey near the top. But who is Ghim and how did he get here?
Ghim played collegiately at Texas and turned pro in 2018. This week marks his 42nd start on the PGA Tour in his career and he has made 22 cuts.

In those 22 cuts made, Ghim has not had overwhelming success. He has 12 finishes in the Top 25 of events, with six of those coming this season. His only career Top 10 came this season when he tied for fifth at the American Express in January.
This week did not start off in spectacular fashion for Ghim. He shot a 1-under par 71 on Thursday, with four birdies and three bogeys. Then on Friday, Ghim had a very clean round with five birdies and no bogeys on his way to a 67. His 6-under total through 36 holes left him in a tie for fifth place heading to the weekend.
On Saturday, Ghim started his round with a birdie on the par-4 first hole. After that, it was seven consecutive pars until he birdied the ninth hole to close his front nine with a 2-under par 34.
That birdie on the ninth turned out to be the first of three in a row, as Ghim birdied the 10th and 11th holes to get to 4-under on his round. He would par the 12th and 13th holes to stay at that number.
Ghim made his final birdie of the day at the par-4 14th hole, getting to 5-under on his round.
The only blemish on Ghim’s card came at the par-5 16th hole when Ghim drove it left the put his second shot in the greenside bunker. His third shot came up short of the green and his fourth got him on the green, but nearly 90 feet from the cup. He was able to get down in two for a bogey six.
Ghim finished strong with two pars to shoot a 68. He finds himself in a tie for third with Thomas, three shots behind Westwood, who is the 54-hole leader.
While he certainly does not have the big name like his competitors, Ghim is right in the mix for not only his first PGA Tour win, but also what could be the signature win of his career.
