Martin Trainer entered Friday at the Honda Classic needing to do basically what he had done on Thursday to make the cut. Trainer shot an even-par 72 in the first round and a similar round would allow him to be around for the weekend.

Instead, Trainer went in the other direction. Way, way, way in the other direction. By the time his round was over on Friday, he was in 141st place out of 144 players in the field. Yes, his round was that bad.

Trainer started his round on the back nine, where he parred the 10th hole. But on the 11th, his tee shot found the water and he ended up making a double bogey.

He would par the 12th and 13th holes to stay at 2-over on his round. But that was right before his round went totally off the rails.

Trainer hit his drive on the 14th hole way left. After a drop, he eventually made the green but not before suffering another double bogey.

On the par-3 15th hole, Trainer hit his tee shot in the water on his way to another double bogey. And on the 16th hole, Trainer found the water yet again on his way to a third straight double bogey. He would finish his first nine holes with an 8-over par 43.

As Trainer made the turn, all hopes of making the cut were gone.

Still, he hoped to turn things around as he started his second nine. Instead, it started in much the same way. Trainer would double bogey the first hole, slipping to 10-over par.

He bogeyed the second, parred the third and bogeyed the fourth. He was 12-over par on his round at that point.

Then on the par-3 fifth hole, Trainer hit his tee shot in the water. He hit a nice recovery, knocking his third shot about 15 feet from the hole. But he would three putt from there for a triple-bogey six.

Trainer did par the final four holes of his round but the damage was done. He shot an 85 to slip 59 spots in the standings. He’ll be watching from home this weekend.
