WGC-Match Play: Return to Austin Working for Jordan Spieth
By Tim Letcher
Jordan Spieth returned to Austin, Texas this week, the city where he played college golf, for the WGC-Match Play event. And the return to his old stomping grounds seems to agree with Speith.
Already experiencing a resurgence in his career this season, Spieth has seen his good fortunes continue this week. Playing in Group 15, Spieth entered the event seeded 49th overall, the lowest-ranked player in his group.

On Wednesday, Spieth faced the highest-seeded player in his group, Matthew Fitzpatrick. The two halved the first hole before Spieth won the second hole with a birdie. Spieth would be 3-up after nine holes and eventually won the match 3&1.
Then on Thursday, Spieth faced Matthew Wolff in a pair that featured opposite styles. Spieth took the lead on the third hole, then went 2-up on the fourth. However, by the time they finished the front nine, Wolff had erased the deficit.
On the back nine, Spieth won the first two holes to go 2-up, a lead he held through 16 holes. But he let Wolff win the 17th and 18th holes to halve the match. Still, it was a good result for Spieth.
Then on Friday, Spieth fell behind Corey Conners, losing the first hole. However, he quickly bounced back and had a 2-up lead by the end of the front nine. He went 3-up by winning the 10th and eventually won the match 3&2.
With a 2-0-1 record, Spieth advances to the round of 16 in the WGC event.
Spieth will face Matt Kuchar in the knockout round, where Spieth, according to the seeding, will actually be the favorite.
In a season where Spieth has already recorded three top-five finishes, doing something big this week would be even bigger. And it could propel to even bigger things with the Masters just around the corner.
