WGC-Match Play: Winners and Losers from Austin
By Tim Letcher
Each week on the PGA Tour, there are those who exceed expectations and others that fall short of what is expected of them. Here at Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are the winners and losers from this week’s WGC-Match Play event in Austin.
Winners
Billy Horschel – The former FedEx Cup champion claimed another big title this week with a 2&1 win over Scottie Scheffler in Sunday’s final. He earned his sixth PGA Tour victory and first since 2018.

Scottie Scheffler – A return to the city where he played college golf did Scheffler a lot of good this week. He made it all the way to the finals before running into a red-hot Horschel. Nevertheless, it was a good showing for Scheffler.
Matt Kuchar – For some reason, he loves this event, having made the semifinals four times in his career. He lost to Scheffler in the semis but beat Perez in the third-place match.
Victor Perez – Before this week, casual American golf fans probably did not know that Perez existed. However, he proved this week that he can play with anyone, making it to the semifinals before falling to Horschel 3&2, then falling to Kuchar in the third-place match.
Brian Harman – As the No. 54 seed, Harman was the lowest seed to make the quarterfinals, where he lost to Kuchar 2&1. Still, it was a very good showing for Harman this week.
Losers
Dustin Johnson – The world’s number one player did not make it out of his group and had an intense dust-up with Kevin Na on Friday. Not the week that DJ was hoping to have for sure.
Justin Thomas – The world’s number two player lost his first two matches of the week before winning on Friday. But it was too late by that point and Thomas did not survive the group stage.
Collin Morikawa – As the fourth seed in the event, Morikawa went 0-2-1 and went home for the weekend. It was a disappointing showing for one of golf’s bright young stars.
Bryson DeChambeau – As the fifth seed, DeChambeau did manage to win one match but lost the other two, including a 2-down loss to Antoine Rozner on Wednesday. Yes, it was that bad of a week for DeChambeau.
Tyrrell Hatton – He was seeded eighth for the event, but went 0-2-1 over the course of three days and could not emerge from the group stage of the event.
