Jordan Spieth has rebounded very nicely this season on the PGA Tour. The next step in his progression, and attempting to get back to his former standing, is to win. Could he do that this week at the Valero Texas Open?

Spieth played well last week at the WGC-Match Play in Austin, the town where he briefly played college golf. The Dallas native clearly feels comfortable in his home state of Texas. Now, he would love for the next step back to greatness to come while he’s in Texas.

There is a track record for Spieth at this event. In his last appearance here, in 2019, Spieth finished in 30th place. In 2015, he finished second and in 2014, he was 10th.

This season, Spieth has looked much more like his old self, especially lately. After starting the season by missing the cut in four of his first seven events, Spieth has surged since the beginning of February.

It started at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, where Spieth held the 54-hole lead after shooting a 61 on Saturday. He would follow that with a 72 on Sunday to finish T4.

The next week at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Spieth again found himself in contention. But with a chance to win on Sunday, he again could not come through, watching Daniel Berger take home the win while Spieth finished T3.

At the Genesis Invitational, Spieth again found himself in contention through 36 holes. But a 73-71 weekend left him tied for 15th place.

After taking a week off, Spieth was back at it at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. There, he was in the mix with 18 holes left to play, only to shoot 75 on Sunday, finishing five shots behind Bryson DeChambeau and in a tie for fourth.

At the Players Championship, Spieth did not play well, with just one round in the 60s. He finished in a tie for 48th.

Then last week at the WGC-Match Play, Spieth won his group to advance to the knockout stage of the event. He lost in the round of 16 but it will still a T9 showing for the three-time major winner.

Spieth continues to knock on the door of victory. Could this be the week he wins for the first time since 2017?
