Valero Texas Open: Cameron Tringale Hopes to Break Winless Streak
By Tim Letcher
Cameron Tringale has never won on the PGA Tour. However, he’s in contention through 54 holes at this week’s Valero Texas Open, looking to break a winless streak that has lasted more than a decade.
As the PGA Tour points out, since 2009, Tringale has made more starts without a win than any player on tour. The number is 296 starts with no victories. The next closest is Ricky Barnes with 292 starts without a win and Chad Campbell with 291 starts without a victory.

Tringale has come close without winning. In 2014, he tied for second at the Barclays on his way to his only trip to East Lake for the Tour Championship. In 2015, he was second to Justin Rose at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. And in 2016, Tringale tied for second at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Since then, Tringale has been able to finish no better than third, which he has done twice. Last season, he tied for third at the 3M Open. And this year, he was solo third at the RSM Classic.
This week started well for Tringale. He had seven birdies on Thursday on his way to a 6-under par 66. Then on Friday, he again carded seven birdies but was only able to shoot a 3-under par 69. Still, he held the 36-hole lead.
On Saturday, he bogeyed the second hole but made up for that with birdies o the fifth and seventh holes. He was 1-under through nine and had the lead.
However, a stretch of holes on the back nine cost Tringale.
After a par on the 10th hole, Tringale bogeyed the 11th. And then the 12th. And then the 13th. He went from 10-under for the week to 7-under and slipped into fourth place.
Tringale did birdie the par-5 14th hole to get one shot back. From there, he would par the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to stay at 8-under for the tournament.
On the 18th hole, Tringale had a 12-foot look at birdie but he missed, settling for a par and a round of 73.
Tringale will start Sunday’s round four shots behind co-leaders Matt Wallace and Jordan Spieth. It will take a big round for him to break his winless streak but at least he has a chance.
