There were certainly a number of interesting storylines on Thursday in the first round of the 2021 Masters. From Justin Rose going low to a number of players shooting big numbers, there was plenty to talk about on the first day of the first major of the season.

As Friday approaches and the second round happens, what will everyone be talking about? Here are five storylines that will be the talk of the Masters on Friday.

More from Pro Golf Now

Augusta National – The venerable course more than held its own on Thursday. Only 12 players broke par and only 19 players shot par or better. As the week goes on, can the course continue to hang tough or will it become more vulnerable to the world’s best players.

Justin Rose – He blew away the field on Thursday with his 7-under par 65. Rose holds a four-shot lead after 18 holes. He has a good history at the Masters with five Top 10s. Could this be the year he finally gets over the hump?

The cut line – There are some big names lurking near what’s expected to be the cut line. Could we have a weekend without Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Matthew Wolff and Patrick Cantlay? That’s definitely an option at this point.

The defending champion – Dustin Johnson opened defense of his Masters title by shooting a 2-over par 74. A double bogey on the 18th hole cost DJ and dropped him into a tie for 30th place. He’s by no means out of the running but he will need to bounce back on Friday.

Will Zalatoris – Casual golf fans may have no idea who this guy is, but he shot a 2-under par 70 on Thursday in his first competitive round at Augusta National. It was an impressive showing indeed. Now, with more attention focused on him, can Zalatoris hold up?

Those storylines and more will be the focus of Friday’s second round of the 2021 Masters.
