Jordan Spieth came into the 2021 Masters as one of the hottest golfers in the world and he showed why on Thursday.

The 2015 Masters champ’s opening round was an emotional rollercoaster from the very beginning.

After a birdie on the par-5 second, Spieth quickly fell back to even-par with a bogey on the par-3 fourth hole.

Spieth regained his composure following the bogey and knocked in three consecutive pars. He followed this streak of pars with a birdie on the par-5 eighth hole.

The momentum created from the birdie quickly vanished on the par-4 ninth hole.

Spieth’s drive on No. 9 found itself deep in the pines on the right side of the hole, setting up Spieth with a nearly impossible shot to the fairway.

Despite the difficulty, Spieth made a play for the fairway. However, Spieth’s shot was hit directly into a tree and pushed him even deeper into the forested area.

This time Spieth had a clean shot out of the woods and left himself short of the green. Spieth chipped the ball to within three feet of the hole before disaster struck.

Spieth proceeded to miss a three-foot putt and an eight-foot put back before finally tapping in for a triple bogey.

Spieth, one of the best scramblers on tour, quickly recovered with a birdie on hole No. 10 to get back to just 1-over par.

Over the next eight holes, Spieth recorded seven pars in addition to a chip-in eagle of the par-5 15th to break back into the red numbers.

Spieth finished Thursday’s round at 1-under par, good enough to put him in a tie for eighth with four other golfers.

To really put Spieth’s round in perspective, it is rather interesting to note that he was the only golfer to record a triple bogey or worse and still shoot under-par on Thursday.
