2021 Masters: Winners and Losers from Augusta National
By Tim Letcher
Each week on the PGA Tour, there are players who do better than expected and those who come up short of expectations. Here at Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are the winners and losers from the season’s first major, the Masters.
Winners
Hideki Matsuyama – He claimed his first major by dominating the weekend at Augusta National. Matsuyama was clearly the best player in the field over the last 27 holes and he earned the victory. Good for him.

Will Zalatoris – Sure, it was not the storybook ending that everyone was hoping for, but there were a number of people who didn’t even know who Zalatoris was prior to this week. He stood tall against the world’s best all week long, finishing just one shot behind Matsuyama.
Jordan Spieth – He came up just short of winning a second green jacket but it was still a good week for Spieth. His T3 bodes well, especially after a win last week, for his prospects moving forward. Looks like Jordan truly is back.
Xander Schauffele – He had much less than his best on Sunday but Schauffele still managed to finish T3 this week. He’s going to win a major, and it might come at Augusta. It’s simply a matter of time.
Marc Leishman – The Aussie hung tough all week, eventually finishing in a tie for fifth place. He was in the hunt early on Sunday before slipping back. Still, it’s a Top 10 in a major, which is a big deal for Leishman.
Losers
Dustin Johnson – The defending champion did not even make the weekend in defense of his green jacket. He shot 74 on Thursday, followed by 75 on Friday and did not make the cut. A disappointing finish for DJ.
Brooks Koepka – This week was an opportunity for Koepka to get back into the win column in a major. Instead, he shot 74-75 and missed the cut. Koepka has been in the hunt at Augusta before but this was not his week.
Rory McIlroy – It was another bad week at Augusta for McIlroy. He shot 76-74 and even hit his dad with a shot at one point. McIlroy still has not won the Masters, the only major missing for his career grand slam. He will have to wait 12 more months for another chance.
Patrick Cantlay – The world’s 10th-ranked player, and someone who has contended here before, simply did not have anything close to what he needed this week. His opening 79 took him out of contention and he followed that with a 73 to miss the cut by a big margin.
Sungjae Im – He tied for second here in the fall and was considered a sleeper pick by some to win this week. Instead, he only beat three players this week after shooting 77-80. He’s still young and will have many more chances here, but this week was certainly less than his best.
