2021 RBC Heritage: Three Holes Cost Sergio Garcia
By Tim Letcher
Sergio Garcia appeared to be in good shape to make the cut this week at the 2021 RBC Heritage. Garcia’s round on Thursday had him in fine position after one round.
On Thursday, Garcia had four birdies and just one bogey on his way to a 3-under par 68. He was six shots off the lead but sat in a tie for 19th after one round.

So on Friday, Garcia would need to shoot something around, or just over, par to make the weekend. And he did…with the exception of three holes that ended up costing him a chance at making the cut.
Garcia played 15 holes in 2-under par, making birdies on the second and fifth holes, on his second nine, on Monday. However, it was the other three holes that sealed his fate.
Two of the bad holes came back-to-back for Garcia. He opened his round on the back nine and was able to par the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th holes.
However, on the par-3 14th hole, Garcia ran into trouble. His tee shot came up short and landed in the water. After taking a drop, his third shot landed on the green, about 25 feet from the hole. His putt for bogey missed and he tapped in for his double-bogey five.
Unfortunately, Garcia’s bad play carried forward to the next hole.
On the par-5 15th hole, Garcia drove it in the left fairway. Then, he hit his second shot in the water. After taking a drop in the rough, Garcia hit his fourth shot into a greenside bunker. From there, he blasted onto the green but needed two putts to get in. It was a second straight double bogey for Garcia.
Garcia’s round was completely undone on the par-3 fifth hole. There, he once again hit his tee shot in the water and took a drop. He pitched onto the green then two-putted for his third double bogey of the round.
Garcia ended up shooting a 4-over par 75 on Friday and missed the cut by three shots. And it was largely due to his three double bogeys on Friday.
