When considering teams with an outside chance to win the 2021 Zurich Classic, some thought that the Billy Horschel-Sam Burns team might have a shot. That seemed to be reasonable, especially considering that Horschel has been playing well so far this year.

The Horschel-Burns team had a fantastic round on Thursday in Louisiana, but it was Burns who carried the team all day long.

Playing the back nine first, Burns got things started for his team with a birdie on the 10th hole. He followed that with a birdie on the 11th and the team was 2-under through two holes.

Horschel made birdie on the 12th hole to get the duo to 3-under. Then Burns birdied the 13th hole and the pair was 4-under through four holes.

After a par by Horschel at the 14th, Burns was back at it again. He birdied the 15th hole, his fourth birdie on the first six holes. His team was 5-under through those six.

Burns would par the 16th and 17th holes but would close the front nine with a birdie on the 18th. That was his fifth birdie of the day, and the sixth for the duo, leaving them at 6-under through the front nine.

Burns continued his hot day as the team made the turn.

After a par on the first hole, Burns birdied the par-5 second hole to get his team to 7-under on the round. He would follow that with a par on the third.

Burns then birdied the par-4 fourth hole to get his team to 8-under par. He would par the fifth before his final birdie of the day, a three at the par-4 sixth hole, got his team to 9-under.

Horschel actually recorded pars on the final three holes, leaving the pair with a 9-under par 63 on the day. That was good enough for a share of the lead when they completed their round.

Burns ended up with eight birdies in his Thursday round. And at least on this day, it was him carrying this pair to the top of the leader board.
