By Tim Letcher
The PGA Tour is in Florida again this week for the Valspar Championship. Played at the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort, this event annually draws a strong field.
This year is no exception, as a number of the world’s top players will be in attendance. Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and some other big names highlight the field this week.

The two-time defending Valspar Championship winner Paul Casey didn’t get the chance to go for a three-peat in 2020 due to the event’s cancelation. Better late than never in 2021, and fortunately for him he’s still in good form. The 43-year-old Englishman already won in 2021 on the European Tour at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. He then proceeded to pile up four more top-12s in a row, one coming on the Euro Tour and the rest on the PGA Tour.

The excellent Sungjae Im is rounding into form after gaining strokes with his Irons at the RBC Heritage a couple of weeks ago. Add in the fact that Im has played well in Florida so far in his young career and was 4th in his debut at the Valspar Championship in 2019, and Sungjae could very well be winning his second event in Florida come Sunday.
Josh Mullenix
Justin Rose. Apart from a missed cut in 2015, Rosey has never finished outside of the top 30 at this event. He’s turned in back-to-back top 11 finishes at the Masters and the Zurich Classic and has been a beautiful ball striker for a long time. Success on this golf course and recent form give Rose a really good chance to be in contention on Sunday.

World number one Dustin Johnson is in the field but he’s not in top form so I’ll take the world’s second-ranked player, Justin Thomas. He won the Players Championship last month and hasn’t played great in his two starts since then, but I have a feeling about him this week. Plus, why not take the Louisville native the same weekend as the Kentucky Derby?

Part of me wants to really pull the trigger this week on a comeback by Gary Woodland. But I can’t do it. Instead I am feeling a serious likelihood of a first-time winner. The guy I have my eye on is Kris Ventura. He played well in New Orleans but got sandbagged by his partner. No partners this week, so I think Ventura can make a serious run.
