Note: The cut line moved to +2 late in the day, meaning that, if it stays there, DeChambeau will make the weekend.

Bryson DeChambeau was seen as one of the favorites at the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship. And why not? He’s the fifth-ranked player in the world and only three players in this week’s field (Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele) were ranked higher.

DeChambeau got off to a fair start on Thursday. Despite taking a double bogey on a par five, DeChambeau was pretty good the rest of the day. He had four birdies and a bogey to go along with the double on his way to a 1-under par 70. That left him in a tie for 35th place after 18 holes.

On Friday, DeChambeau hoped to position himself so that he could make a run at the top on the weekend. Instead, he went in the other direction. And it was one hole in particular that will cost him a chance at playing on the weekend.

Starting on the back nine, DeChambeau opened with pars on the 10th and 11th holes. However, he suffered a bogey at the par-4 12th to slip to 1-over on his round.

He would par the 13th and 14th holes before a birdie on the par-5 15th, the hole he had double bogeyed on Thursday, got him back to even on his round.

After pars on the 16th and 17th holes, DeChambeau bogeyed the 18th hole. That left him with a 1-over par 37 on his first nine.

As he made the turn, DeChambeau got the par train rolling. In fact, he parred the first six holes on his second nine, remaining at 1-over and in danger of missing the cut. He needed to make something happen on the final three holes.

DeChambeau certainly made something happen on the par-5 seventh hole.

He hit a booming drive, nearly 340 yards, but it landed in the left rough. Still, he had less than 200 yards to the green for his second shot.

But that shot came up short and landed in the water. After a drop, DeChambeau found the water again. By the time he was done, he had carded a triple-bogey eight, dropping him to 4-over on his round and 3-over for the tournament.

DeChambeau was able to birdie the par-4 eight hole but only managed a par on the ninth. That left him with a round of 74, which landed him at 2-over for the tournament. The cut will likely be at even or 1-over, leaving DeChambeau out for the weekend.

As he looks back on this event, the par-5 seventh hole will be the one that prevented DeChambeau from playing the weekend.
