2021 Byron Nelson: Sam Burns Torches TPC Craig Ranch
By Tim Letcher
Sam Burns shot the round of the week so far on Friday at the 2021 AT&T Byron Nelson. Now, the young talent will take the lead into the weekend, trying to win for the second time within a month.
Burns got off to a solid start in the event on Thursday. He had five birdies and an eagle on his way to a 7-under par 65. That left him in a tie for seventh place through 18 holes.

But on Friday, Burns turned in the round of his professional life. And in doing so, he took the 36-hole lead.
Burns got off to a fast start on his round with a birdie on the par-4 first hole. He followed that with three pars and he remained at 1-under through four holes.
On the par-5 fifth hole, Burns recorded his second birdie of the day. The he birdied the par-4 sixth hole to move to 3-under on his round.
Burns parred the seventh and eight holes before closing his first nine with a birdie on the par-5 ninth. He finished his first nine with a 4-under par 32.
Then on the back nine, Burns caught fire.
He started with a par on the par-4 10th hole. But then, he birdied the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th holes consecutively. He moved from 4-under to 8-under in a matter of four holes. He also took the lead in the process.
But Burns was not done. After pars on the 15th and 16th holes, Burns birdied the par-3 17th hole to get to 9-under on his Friday round. He then closed his round with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole to shoot a 10-under par 62.
It was the lowest round that Burns has ever shot on the PGA Tour. It was also one shot off the course record, a 61 by Ryan Palmer, at TPC Craig Ranch.
After missing a couple of opportunities to win with 54-hole leads, Burns finally broke through at the Valspar Championship two weeks ago. He could have another 54-hole lead this week and, having learned how to win already, Burns could be tough to catch.
