You wouldn’t think of Colonial to be a great fit for Tony Finau. However, the big hitter has been able to carve out a niche at one of the PGA Tour’s more cozy layouts. Five Charles Schwab Challenge starts all resulted in the top 34 with a solo second (64-68-71-68) in 2019 as the highlight.

“I’ve had some good rounds here,” Finau was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2017. “I consider myself a shot maker. I’m very feel when I play and I can shape it both ways. I think that’s what you need on this golf course: you need to be able to shape the ball and really make up some shots when you miss the fairway.”

The 31-year-old comes into the week off of T-8th at the PGA Championship, his sixth straight made cut in a major.

It was classic Finau as he never truly contended, but rose up the leaderboard with two under-par rounds on the weekend. A reason why he succeeds at Colonial and hung around at Kiawah Island is his underrated short game.

Finau led the field last week in strokes gained around the green (6.291 total) and is 15th on the season (.41 per round). He’s also seventh in SG tee to green (1.386) and eighth in holes per eagle (88.4).

Prior to the PGA Championship, Finau also recorded T-10th at the Masters and had three straight runner-ups early in the year. This will be just his third individual start since the Masters, so I like him to be fresh and ready to contend quite a bit in an important stretch of golf coming up.
