Jordan Spieth loves playing in the state of Texas, especially in 2021. That trend continued on Thursday in the first round of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.

Seen as the favorite this week, Spieth did not disappoint in his first round. He got things stared early and continued to roll all day long.

Playing the back nine first, Spieth got into red figures on his first hole of the day. At the par-4 10th hole, he hit his drive into the fairway, knocked his approach to about 12 feet and made the putt for birdie.

After a par at the 11th, Spieth got another birdie at the 12th hole. His approach shot on the par four was about 10 feet from the cup and he rolled in the putt to get to 2-under through three holes.

Spieth would make four pars in a row, a streak that ended on the par-4 17th hole. There, the native Texan hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker. However, he got his second shot on the green, about 20 feet from the hole. And, Spieth being Spieth, he made the long putt for birdie to get to 3-under par. That’s where he would finish his first nine.

His back nine was quiet early but ended with a bang.

Spieth parred the first hole before a birdie on the second. From there, he made four straight pars, staying at 4-under par.

But his finish was outstanding. On the par-4 seventh hole, Spieth drilled a 15-foot putt for birdie to get to 5-under par. At the par-3 eighth hole, he missed the green but then chipped in from the rough to get to 6-under par.

Spieth’s day finished at the par-4 ninth hole. There, he stuck his approach shot about three feet from the cup and made another birdie. That was three birdies in a row to close his round, in which he shot a 7-under par 63.

Among those out early on Thursday, Spieth led the field by three shots. A past winner here, and already a winner in Texas this season, Spieth hopes the momentum he gained on Thursday will carry on all weekend.
