2021 Charles Schwab: Charley Hoffman Nearly Breaks Record on Friday
By Tim Letcher
Charley Hoffman entered Friday’s round at the 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge needing to make something happen. After shooting a 1-over par round of 71 on Thursday, Hoffman was dangerously near the cut line as play began on Friday.
Rather than hang around the cut line all day long, Hoffman got things going early. And he nearly set a record in the process.

Hoffman opened his round with a par on the first hole. Then, he carded his first birdie, getting to 1-under on the second hole.
However, he gave that shot back on the next hole. Playing the par-4 third hole, Hoffman drove it in the rough and was not able to recover. He made a bogey, which turned out to be his only one of the day.
After pars on the fourth and fifth holes, Hoffman got things rolling. He birdied the sixth hole. Then the seventh. After a par on the eighth, he birdied the nine. He ended up shooting a 3-under par 32 on the front nine.
His back nine started slowly but picked up late.
Hoffman parred the 10th hole, then birdied the par-5 11th. That got him to 4-under par on his round. He would par the 12th and 13th holes to stay at that number.
But starting on the 14th hole, Hoffman got really hot. In fact, he would birdie the next four holes, 14 through 17, to get to 8-under par.
Coming to the ninth hole, Hoffman needed a birdie to tie the course record at Colonial Country Club, which is a 61 held by Justin Leonard and Kevin Na. He nearly had it.
Hoffman drove his ball in the left rough but hit the green with his second shot. He had about 20 feet for birdie and just missed. Hoffman had to settle for an 8-under par 62.
With his big round, Hoffman moved up more than 50 spots on the leaderboard. He’s now inside the Top 10 and will be in the mix as the third round gets underway, all thanks to a huge round on Saturday.
