2021 Charles Schwab: Patrick Reed Blows Chance to Make Cut
By Tim Letcher
Patrick Reed was considered one of the favorites at this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge. But a bad hole at a bad time cost Reed a chance at playing the weekend in Fort Worth.
Reed had a solid day on Thursday in the first round at Colonial Country Club. He started his day par-birdie-eagle on his way to a 2-under par 68.

Friday’s round was different in that it was much more up-and-down. Reed bogeyed the first hole, birdied the second and bogeyed the third. That left him at 1-over through three holes.
Reed would par the fourth and fifth holes to stay at that figure. He then bogeyed the sixth hole to slip to 2-over par and inched closer to the cut line.
Reed got one back with a birdie at the eighth hole, lifting him to 1-over par. But a bogey on the ninth hole left him with a 2-over par 37 on his front nine.
Then on the back, Reed cost himself a chance at playing Colonial on Saturday and Sunday.
It’s not that his back nine was awful. In fact, it was just bad enough to keep Reed outside of the cut line.
His back nine started with four consecutive pars. He then bogeyed the par-4 14th hole to slip to 3-over on his round and 1-over for the championship. He would need to finish at that number to make the cut.
It looked like Reed would do just that. He parred the 15th, 16th and 17th holes. He needed just a par on 18 to make the cut.
On the 18th hole, Reed hit his drive a little right and into the intermediate rough. He pulled his second shot into the greenside bunker on the left. He would need to get up-and-down to make the weekend.
Reed’s bunker shot was actually pretty good. He left himself about eight feet for par to make the cut. Alas, the putt missed and Reed will not be around for the weekend.
While Reed was one of the highest-ranked players in the field, he failed to make the cut. That will make some people very happy, as Reed remains one of the game’s most polarizing figures.
