2021 Palmetto Championship: Mark Hensby Suffers Through Brutal Round
By Tim Letcher
Pro Golf Now later learned that Hensby incurred a 10-shot penalty for using an incorrect ball during his round.
Mark Hensby is less than a month away from being able to join the PGA Tour Champions circuit. And after the round he had on Thursday at the 2021 Palmetto Championship, it can’t come soon enough for the 49-year-old Australian.
Hensby suffered through a brutal day at Congaree in Thursday’s first round. Things went bad almost from the very start and never got better for the winner of the 2004 John Deere Classic.

Hensby opened with pars on the first and second holes. Little did he know he wouldn’t make another par until the ninth.
In between, Hensby had a little bit of everything. He carded a triple bogey on the third hole after hitting his tee shot into the water. He matched that with another triple bogey on the fourth hole. Suddenly, Hensby went from even par to 6-over in just two holes.
He would bogey the par-3 fifth hole, which may have seemed like a bit of a victory for Hensby. But on the sixth hole, he took another penalty on his way to a double bogey. He was nine over through six holes.
Hensby bogeyed the par-3 seventh hole before another double bogey came on the eighth hole. He would par the ninth to shoot a 12-over par 48 on his first nine.
The back nine was not quite so cruel for Hensby.
He parred the 10th hole before a bogey at 11. He then parred the 12th hole before a bogey at the 13th hole. He was 14-over par at that point.
To his credit, Hensby did not give up on his round. He actually birdied the par-3 14th hole to get himself back to 13-over on his round.
He finished his round with four straight pars to shoot a 13-over par 84. He withdrew from the event following the round.
