Notable 121st U.S. Open Round 1 Tee Times
The USGA released tee times for the 121st U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Here are six notable groupings for the first round, all times are pacific time.
7:29 a.m. – Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka
The names speak for themselves here. All three of these players have won a major championship. Morikawa won the 2020 PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park, Justin Thomas won the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow and Koepka won the 2017 and 2018 U.S. Opens at Erin Hills and Bethpage Black.

Furthermore, all three players are in the top 10 of the OWGR rankings, Morikawa and Thomas in the top five and all three have won in 2021. Koepka won the Waste Management Open, Morikawa the WGC Workday Championship and JT the Players. These are three high profile names playing mostly quality golf this season.
7:51 a.m. – Max Homa, Xander Schauffele and Phil Mickelson
Max Homa is the reigning Genesis Invitational champion. That’s a tough golf course and he has four top 18 finishes since then including a T6 finish at the Memorial two weeks ago.
The headline is the next two names. Schauffele’s worst finish in four career U.S. Opens is T6. He’s a San Diego native playing in front of the hometown crowd looking for that first major championship he’s been chasing for years.
In 2021, Mickelson is the most recent major champion and he’s still the guy chasing that elusive U.S. Open trophy. This is Mickelson’s 30th start in this major.
1:14 p.m. – Tyler Strafaci, Hideki Matsuyama, Bryson DeChambeau
The defending U.S. Open champion, the 2021 Masters champion and the most recent U.S. Amateur champion. This is quite the group and an awesome opportunity for Strafaci. Matsuyama has only played three events since winning the Masters in mid-April. His best finish was a T23 at the PGA Championship.
DeChambeau already has a win this season at the Arnold Palmer Invitational as well as a T3 at the Players and a T9 at the Wells Fargo. The story with Bryson at U.S. Opens will always be fascinating when he hits it so far. His strength out of the thick rough and distance lay the foundation for an argument that he should be one of the favorites at every U.S. Open.
Any group that has the Masters and U.S. Open champ is going to be fun to watch.
1:25 p.m. – Will Zalatoris, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth
This group is going to be so fun to watch. Will Zalatoris introduced himself to the world at the 2021 Masters finishing runner up to Matsuyama. Scottie Scheffler lost in the championship match of the WGC Dell Match Play and Jordan Spieth is Jordan Spieth
This group feels almost like a buddies trip, but it would be the highest level of golf ever played on a buddies trip. Scheffler and Spieth both played at the University of Texas and Zalatoris now resides in Texas as well. Spieth has made a return to the top of the sport and the two young guns are hunting for a major that seems to be a question of when, not if.
1:36 p.m. – Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose
This is another one of those groups that speaks for itself. Johnson is the No. 1 player in the world coming off a strong week at the Palmetto Championship. Rory McIlroy hasn’t won a major since he won the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla. His quest for distance ruining his swing has been a major topic the last few months including a win at the Wells Fargo Championship. DJ and McIlroy are always topics of conversation come major championship week.
Rose spent a lot of the 2021 Masters at the top of the leaderboard before failing to bring it home on the weekend. After struggling with equipment for a while, Rose has three top 20 finishes in his last four starts including back-to-back top 8 finishes at majors. Oh, and he’s the 2013 U.S. Open champion.
1:35 p.m. – Marc Leishman, Jon Rahm, Patrick Reed
This grouping is notable for one main reason. Yes, it consists of three world class players. More specifically, it consists of three players who have won the Farmers Insurance Open in the last five years. These three guys are all in the top five of average finishes at the Farmers Insurance Open among players with three or more starts. Why is that significant? The Farmers is also played at Torrey Pines and these guys know how to get it done around the South Course.
Rahm has four top seven finishes in five starts. Reed has four top 25 finishes over the last four years including a win. And Leishman has seven top 20 finishes including four top 10s over the course of his career at Torrey Pines.
